Rekofacts: Full-immersion gaming

Fully-immersive simulator games powered by the brainchip are the top form of entertainment on Rekodenz.

The majority download games, the most popular titles being MMOs and shmups, just like on 2017 Earth. The most popular MMOs routinely have over five hundred billion players from all over Rekodenz and Earth (the game is offered in Anglic, Yuniyu and Emogo in addition to Standard Rekodenza and a number of other indigenous languages) playing at any one time. The Rekodenzian movie industry is generally limited to art films (of both varieties) due to the popularity of gaming.

Simulator parlours are also popular as they enable more powerful games to be played for a small fee (usually 10,000,000 credits) per play. Some, such as in Central City Xotopane where there are believed to be over fifty thousand, are so popular that queues can stretch for over a mile outside and patrons are restricted to three plays or thirty minutes per session. A reason for this popularity is that many outlets offer physical prizes for points collected while playing, ranging from keyrings and candy to penthouse apartments.

Regardless of the context, I see this being the future of gaming.

The vicious circle

Amaa Taylor was the product of a species mix- ses xaxa a full-blooded Scrublander and ses rara a human from the Eurasian Confederation. Se looked like any typical Reman with ses bluish skin and standing upright, but ses upbringing in both cultures was stronger.

As a result, the UP’s mandatory “human awareness” classes grated on sem. Inaccurate at best, downright offensive at worst.

The chirpy narrator talked about how The human arrived on Rekodenz with one goal- to eradicate us.

Se knew that not to be true. The humans had strict rules against killing off the native population and impinging on their right to a culture. To be against these was to become a pariah.

To this day, the human seeks nothing more but to live out ses power fantasies. The Human Party regularly talks about “making Rekodenz human” and has dismissed us as “primitive”.

More wrongness salted with propaganda- the Human Party were a fringe party openly condemned by the Prime Minister and other political leaders including humans on both Earth and Rekodenz.

There is no such thing as a good human, no matter what they do to “help” us. The only solution is to breed them out. Your identity, your blood, is your greatest asset. Weaponise it.

Amaa got up. “That’s it! The UP and the Humans are one and the SAME! It’s not okay when the Humans say it, but it’s perfectly fine when the UP does? I can’t take this hypocritical crap anymore!” Se stormed out of the room, running into the night and the front pages of the Rekonet.

Rekodenz self Q&A

In the name of fun…

Do Rekodenzians grow facial hair, being unigender and all?

Yes, all Rekodenzians are capable of growing facial hair. In Rema, the place of greatest human influence, it is considered proper to shave although facial hair does have waves of popularity.

Is is acceptable to refer to all Rekodenzians as “Rekodenzians”?

Of course! Every planetary citizen- fullblood, halfblood or human- is a Rekodenzian! Some non-Remans do have a problem with Earthers using the term to refer exclusively to Remans, considering it to be making their status as such invisible.

How long does it take to get from Rekodenz to Earth, and vice versa?

By teleport, the most common mode, it takes no time. The original human voyage to the planet took two hundred and eighteen years, almost constantly travelling at the speed of light. Now travel can take less than a week by ship due to the teleport gates, located behind planetary moons to enable astronomical observation.

How do Rekodenzians go to the toilet?

*sigh* I hate half term…

Extraterrestrials and gender

Humans generally come in male and female, with a few inbetween individuals.

But what about extraterrestrials?

Today’s featured article on Wikipedia is Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness. This was one of the first, if not THE first SFF piece to explore a society not constrained by gender. The residents of Gethen are genderless, or “ambisexual” (the lines between “sexuality” and “gender” being more blurred in the 1960s than they are today), much to the confusion of the human male protagonist. Le Guin described this in the foreword to the 1976 edition as a “thought experiment”.

My Rekodenzians are unisex creatures existing in a postgender society. In English and Anglic, they are generally referred to using the pronouns se, sem and ses. Le Guin refers to Gethenians in the masculine, but I feel that gender-neutral pronouns are more appropriate lest they be percieved as a binary gender (Le Guin, interestingly, has been attacked for presenting heterosexuality as the norm on Gethen with the implications that Ai and Estreven’s “forbidden love” is a homosexual one. There are so many things wrong with that conclusion I do not know where to begin). When I first started building the world of Rekodenz, in 2004, I envisioned them as being either male or female. After exploring the world of the Gethenians, I came to the conclusion that extraterrestrial societies, if they exist, probably do not have “gender” in the same way we do, in both biology and mental wiring. To me this is less of a “thought experiment” and more of a prediction. Western society is already making rapid shifts towards genderlessness, and by the time we discover intelligent life we probably won’t care about gender anway except for in biological discussion.

In short, Rekodenzians are genderless because I believe that extraterrestrials probably will be. This is not intended as a dig at anyone in the SFF community who thinks otherwise, and is just my opinion. I’m all ears.

Rekodenz ethnography- the “fullbloods”

The people often referred to as “fullbloods” are the thousands of interrelated species of little to no human descent. These people are the majority on every continent except for the subcontinent of Rema, where “halfbloods”-  a mix of the blood of indigenous Remans and humans- are the majority especially in the capital of Xotopane.

Especially in Rema and other halfblood/human majority areas, the fullbloods often feel they are underrepresentated in politics and the media. The Xotopane-based Rekodenz Diet has tried to address this, most recently by having a quota of people representing “ethnic parties”- mostly fullblood- in both local and general elections unless this number is too small. While largely praised, it has also been criticised for allowing the pan-Rekodenz fullblood supremacists the Unification Party to flourish. Several other regional Diets have also enacted similar species quotas, with similar results. The first fullblood Prime Minister was Tamz Vzizo of Vwmekkng, Krngu in the 204th Diet, but only ten more fullbloods have been elected to the position since.

Species are extremely diverse, but all can interbreed. In fact, several species legally classed as “fullblood” were originally mixtures of two or more species. These include the Narraks of northern Rema (Scrublander and Gerrok) and the Yxes of Smxru (Xroxi and Harrup).

To be added to on a later date.

Addendum 2 of the UP’s reign of terror- the Preservation of Tradition Act

After taking over the Scrublands Diet, the Unification Party enacted the “Preservation of Tradition Act”, banning all airgraph and Rekonet access within the Scrublands. This was done under, as the name implied, the pretense of preserving traditional ways, but many commentators both inside and outside of the Scrublands saw it as something different.

Anonymous Scrublands-based blogger Scrublands Wizard thought of it as a way to dissimate only approved opinions. Kaaroze Wvanniky, a Scrublands Diet and UP member, disagreed with it on the grounds that “enemy parties” could cross the border undetected as news was carried by runners and likely could not reach the nearest Peacemakers for days. Se was removed from ses seat and sentenced to death, but escaped and is presently in exile on the Isle of Drikkavon near the North Pole, where se blogs about ses experiences of being ex-UP.

A survey taken by an independent thinktank suggested that 83 percent of urban Scrublanders “strongly disagreed” with the Act, another twelve percent merely “disagreeing” and only two percent “agreeing” or “strongly agreeing”. 96% of these urban Scrublanders also said they used banned technology or knew somebody who did, not surprising given the well-documented prevalence of this technology in the cities.

When the UP fell, several acts were immediately repealed by the reformed Scrublands Diet, including this. And there was much rejoicing.
