Born on December 25th with an celebration observed on that date. The Catholic Church repurposed Saturnalia in order to attract converts from Rome
Yet many conservative Christians complain about taking “Christ” out of “Christmas”. Now let me state that I am strongly opposed to denying people their winter holiday of choice, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice or anything else. I feel that the genericisation of elements obviously of one holiday can be done in the nature of inclusion but end up exclusionary, for example calling a Christmas tree a “holiday tree” or a menorah a “holiday candelabra” denies the unique elements of both Christmas and Hanukkah. Yet It’s somewhat hypocritical that so many complain about elements being stripped of their “Christian roots” when their roots were in pagan observances. The Christmas tree itself is rooted in Northern European customs that predated the arrival of Christianity. Yule logs? Same thing.
Very little, if nothing, in the most well-known Christmas celebration comes from the Middle East at the time of Jesus. And some Christian denominations consider it a pagan holiday for that reason. So eat, drink and be merry and remember the reason for the season- Saturn.
