Through the eyes of the blind

Today I came across the work of Esref Armagan, a Turkish artist who has been blind since birth. It is unbelievable to me, a sighted person, that a man who has never seen the world around him can paint it so vividly and accurately. Take a look at this:

The attention to detail is absolutely fantastic. Together with the strokes (he prefers to paint with his fingers), the painting evokes Cezanne at his most whimsical. I notice an attention to texture which is rare amongst sighted artists- the trees in both the foreground and background are built up with dabs of paint.

To those thinking blind people are doomed to a life of darkness, Armagan is proof that they are not, seeing the world in his own way.
